March 13, 2025 - The University of the Philippines Mindanao took part in the 1st Quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen earthquake preparedness and awareness. The exercise simulated a low-magnitude earthquake scenario, testing the university’s emergency response protocols and ensuring readiness in the face of potential seismic events.

Faculty, staff, and students actively participated, following the “Duck, Cover, and Hold” before proceeding to designated safe zones. The activity emphasized the importance of swift and coordinated responses during earthquakes to minimize risks and ensure safety. Trained marshals guided participants throughout the drill, ensuring orderly movement and adherence to safety protocols. The simulation also included a post-drill assessment where participants and organizers discussed areas for improvement, reinforcing the university’s commitment to disaster preparedness.

This activity highlighted the critical importance of swift, well-coordinated evacuations during earthquakes to minimize potential risks, prevent injuries, and ensure the overall safety of everyone on campus. By practicing efficient response measures, participants gained firsthand experience in executing proper evacuation procedures, fostering a culture of preparedness and resilience. The drill underscored the necessity of remaining calm under pressure, following designated escape routes, and adhering to safety protocols to reduce chaos and confusion. Additionally, it reinforced the value of teamwork and effective communication in ensuring that faculty, staff, and students can respond quickly and efficiently in the event of a real earthquake.
Vice Chancellor Leo Manuel B. Estaña, serving as Incident Commander, led the drill, ensuring its smooth execution and adherence to safety protocols. The UP Mindanao Incident Command System (UPMIN-ICS) team closely monitored and assessed the evacuation procedures, evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of emergency responses. The drill was classified as a Level 1 Exercise, primarily focusing on the proper evacuation of personnel, the activation of emergency protocols, and the coordination between response teams. Participants were guided through designated routes to safe zones, where emergency marshals provided instructions and conducted safety checks. The exercise also served as an opportunity to identify areas for improvement in disaster preparedness, reinforcing UP Mindanao’s commitment to fostering a culture of safety and resilience.
