May 6, 2025 — University of the Philippines Vice President for Development Daniel Peckley Jr. (OVPD) met with the officials from the Davao City Government and UP Mindanao to discuss the progress of the proposed Davao City Public Hospital, a collaborative project that will establish a public healthcare facility on the UP Mindanao campus. The initiative was formalized through a memorandum of agreement between UP and the Davao City Government, approved by the UP Board of Regents during its 1363rd meeting on August 26, 2021.
Assistant City Administrator Atty. Janis Louis Esparcia presented updates on behalf of the city, joined by fellow officials Atty. Karmela Tongo, Atty. Marlie Muñoz, and Atty. Jonah Presto. Representing UP Mindanao were Chancellor Lyre Anni Murao and Vice Chancellor for Administration Leo Manuel Estaña. Also present was Dr. Gerardo Legaspi, Director of the University of the Philippines – Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH), who revisited earlier discussions between UP and the City Government on the hospital’s development, operations, and public health objectives. His insights reaffirmed UP-PGH’s commitment to supporting the project and ensuring it meets both academic and healthcare standards. VP Peckley, accompanied by senior architects Stephen George Sy and Terrence Milo from the Office of the Vice President for Development (OVPD), provided further guidance on campus infrastructure planning and addressed matters concerning land use and institutional collaboration.
The Davao City Public Hospital is envisioned to strengthen public healthcare delivery in the region while advancing UP Mindanao’s role as a hub for public service and regional development.
